Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central, is tipped to become the next NDC Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, as Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson shifts focus to the Finance Ministry.
The likelihood of Ayariga’s appointment follows a decision to re-evaluate earlier choices for parliamentary leadership positions.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who was initially named Majority Leader shortly after the NDC’s electoral victory, is reportedly set to assume a different role in government after being nominated for Minister of Finance by President John Dramani Mahama.
Dr Ato Forson’s nomination was initially celebrated, but sources suggest that his financial and economic expertise is now deemed better suited for a role within the Finance Ministry.
Mahama Ayariga’s qualifications
Mahama Ayariga, a seasoned lawmaker, has earned a reputation as a skilled debater and legislative strategist. As an MP for multiple terms, he has held key ministerial portfolios, including as Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Minister of Information.

Ayariga’s familiarity with parliamentary procedures and his ability to build consensus among MPs are seen as critical assets for the Majority Leader role.
This transition reflects the Mahama administration’s strategic approach to distributing talent across both legislative and executive arms of government.
As Mahama Ayariga’s name emerges as the frontrunner for the Majority Leader role, all eyes will be on Parliament in the coming days for an official announcement.
