Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has launched a specialized Leak Detection Field to combat significant water losses. By partnering with Denmark’s Aarhus Vand, GWL aims to equip its staff with the skills and tools to effectively address these losses, estimated at 48% of its annual production.
This collaboration, facilitated by the Danish Embassy, provides GWL with access to modern leak detection techniques, including asset management and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. The pilot project in Tema, implemented under Denmark’s Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC), demonstrates the effectiveness of Danish water loss reduction strategies in the Ghanaian context.
The Leak Detection Field will serve as a practical training ground, enabling GWL staff to locate and repair visible and hidden leaks in water pipelines. This initiative complements GWL’s ongoing modernization efforts, including implementing smart meters and digitising its commercial operations.
Dr Clifford Braimah, Managing Director of GWL, emphasized the critical need for proactive measures in combating water losses, highlighting the significant financial and operational impacts of unreported leaks. He emphasized the importance of technology in positioning GWL as a world-class utility, capable of meeting the growing demands of Ghana’s urban population.
Mr. Tom Norring, Danish Ambassador to Ghana, stressed the importance of reducing water loss to improve water service and reduce energy consumption. He emphasized the role of skilled expertise and technical knowledge in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6.
This initiative marks a significant step towards a more sustainable water management model for GWL, benefiting the utility and its customers across Ghana.
